Mindful and mindless communication
Phatic communication is a form of small talk that helps us appear social and gives the impression that we are interested in others. Everybody can admit to do this more then one time. I find it convenient then just walking away or ignore somebody. Something else you see that is common in mangers in organization is scripts. There has been times when i felt that it wasn't coming from the heart, that its the same routine speech every manger gives to every employee. It makes me feel that a script is attached with no emotion. On the positive side , scripts can help you play out an conversation with a coworker if you have nothing really to say. I feel each individual should be spoken to different every time when spoken to .( chapter 11, page 344-345)

I think this could also be most of the small talk that we interact in. The "hi how are you's" are usually a form of speech that is not really meant. It isn't usually an invitation to actually have the person how they are really doing. We are most aware of this when someone seems to share too much and we are uncomfortable or annoyed.
