Mindful and mindless communication

Phatic communication is a form of small talk that helps us appear social and gives the impression that we are interested in others. Everybody can admit to do this more then one time. I find it convenient then just walking away or ignore somebody. Something else you see that is common in mangers in organization is scripts. There has been times when i felt that it wasn't coming from the heart, that its the same routine speech every manger gives to every employee. It makes me feel that a script is attached with no emotion. On the positive side , scripts can help you play out an conversation with a coworker if you have nothing really to say. I feel each individual should be spoken to different every time when spoken to .( chapter 11, page 344-345)

New Technology

So they say in chapter 10 face to face communication was prevalent until the 1950's and the 1960's. Is that saying one day a supervisors decide just to sit down with an employee and talk about an issue, that's weird how life works. Further more into the technology, the significantly affects works process, employees productivity and work life , and the character of interpersonal and power relationship. There are two broad categories of communication technology that are available to organizations: computer assisted communication and computer assisted decision aiding. The first one is the various methods of image transmission and the second one is on line management information system. To sum it up , both just enhance communication within the organizations and speed things up.( chapter 10,page 328-329)

Leadership

This chapter made very logical and strategic points about leadership. I was not aware that a leader should recognized in so many different ways, to name some few, transformational, situational and leadership style. Everyone of those play coincide with each other. I thought about my strengths and weakness as a leader and which one best stands out for me and i couldn't pick one. I believe that the position i hold at work and the type of individual i am i display all of them. But i like how on page 286 how it talks about what a good leader is. The most important part of that piece says, " a good leader is not only a visionary, but leads by example. I believe in those large organizations their are large volumes of good leaders. I mean, Bill Gates and Donald Trump for an example both run multi billion dollar corporations and people like working for them. The key to success for an organization is communication and a successful leader.

Pervasive Communication

I believe are new communication is very similar to our new communication. Our Internet, cell phones, mp3 and ipods are so very useful. Believe it or not there all the same, just each one has a different form of it. Each one is capable of sending a message to another person form long distance, or picking up of ones voice waves or even sending pictures somehow. Then again each one is unique in its own way. We are able to send a message to somebody without even seeing there face or knowing if there busy, just by text messaging or sending an email. I think it is so fascinating how technologies continues to improve every year. ( web lecture)

Communicating in networks

The book defines communication network as a groups of individuals who may be identified as sharing regular lines of communication - have become a primary mode of organizing in the new economy . The virtual world has taken over organizations all around the world. The communication is much different, it has its pros and cons. I think some pros would be you get to understand the perspective of somebody Else's view say from India. Sometimes that communication can be miss construed. Personally i never worked in the virtual world as part as a team. The cons would be never really being able to establish that personal relationship with them in person. (Chapter 8, pg 256)

Communication in teams

I have always been a fan of working within a team. I think its very difficult to work on a team, simply because everybody has something different to offer as far as strenghts. In chapter 8 they do a good job in say teams usually fall into three categories, project team, work team and quality improvement teams. Now a project team helps coordinate the successful completion of a particular. Second is the matrix team, which are characterized by dual reporting relationships. The one that stood out to me the most was work team, it it a group of employees responsible for the entire work process that delivers a product or service to a customer. Now being part of a work team makes you feel like you are part of a team. The team its self is responsible for the good and the bad that comes from work.
