This entire book has been about organization and communication and how it affects each one, and the role it plays within organizations. Democracy refers to people having power or strenght to run themselves. Their are a lot of countries who need a strong democratic government and make the their people believe in them. But more so on dialogue, it's very important to have that throughout the models of democracy models. The procedures, rules and requirements are essential for success throughout each stage.

Mindful and mindless communication

Phatic communication is a form of small talk that helps us appear social and gives the impression that we are interested in others. Everybody can admit to do this more then one time. I find it convenient then just walking away or ignore somebody. Something else you see that is common in mangers in organization is scripts. There has been times when i felt that it wasn't coming from the heart, that its the same routine speech every manger gives to every employee. It makes me feel that a script is attached with no emotion. On the positive side , scripts can help you play out an conversation with a coworker if you have nothing really to say. I feel each individual should be spoken to different every time when spoken to .( chapter 11, page 344-345)

New Technology

So they say in chapter 10 face to face communication was prevalent until the 1950's and the 1960's. Is that saying one day a supervisors decide just to sit down with an employee and talk about an issue, that's weird how life works. Further more into the technology, the significantly affects works process, employees productivity and work life , and the character of interpersonal and power relationship. There are two broad categories of communication technology that are available to organizations: computer assisted communication and computer assisted decision aiding. The first one is the various methods of image transmission and the second one is on line management information system. To sum it up , both just enhance communication within the organizations and speed things up.( chapter 10,page 328-329)

Leadership

This chapter made very logical and strategic points about leadership. I was not aware that a leader should recognized in so many different ways, to name some few, transformational, situational and leadership style. Everyone of those play coincide with each other. I thought about my strengths and weakness as a leader and which one best stands out for me and i couldn't pick one. I believe that the position i hold at work and the type of individual i am i display all of them. But i like how on page 286 how it talks about what a good leader is. The most important part of that piece says, " a good leader is not only a visionary, but leads by example. I believe in those large organizations their are large volumes of good leaders. I mean, Bill Gates and Donald Trump for an example both run multi billion dollar corporations and people like working for them. The key to success for an organization is communication and a successful leader.

Pervasive Communication

I believe are new communication is very similar to our new communication. Our Internet, cell phones, mp3 and ipods are so very useful. Believe it or not there all the same, just each one has a different form of it. Each one is capable of sending a message to another person form long distance, or picking up of ones voice waves or even sending pictures somehow. Then again each one is unique in its own way. We are able to send a message to somebody without even seeing there face or knowing if there busy, just by text messaging or sending an email. I think it is so fascinating how technologies continues to improve every year. ( web lecture)

Communicating in networks

The book defines communication network as a groups of individuals who may be identified as sharing regular lines of communication - have become a primary mode of organizing in the new economy . The virtual world has taken over organizations all around the world. The communication is much different, it has its pros and cons. I think some pros would be you get to understand the perspective of somebody Else's view say from India. Sometimes that communication can be miss construed. Personally i never worked in the virtual world as part as a team. The cons would be never really being able to establish that personal relationship with them in person. (Chapter 8, pg 256)

Communication in teams

I have always been a fan of working within a team. I think its very difficult to work on a team, simply because everybody has something different to offer as far as strenghts. In chapter 8 they do a good job in say teams usually fall into three categories, project team, work team and quality improvement teams. Now a project team helps coordinate the successful completion of a particular. Second is the matrix team, which are characterized by dual reporting relationships. The one that stood out to me the most was work team, it it a group of employees responsible for the entire work process that delivers a product or service to a customer. Now being part of a work team makes you feel like you are part of a team. The team its self is responsible for the good and the bad that comes from work.

Organizing difference in organizations

In chapter 7 they introduce the idea that a significant goal of many organizations is to regulate and control their members identities. Alvesson and Wilmort , two European scholars that it is important that an individual or a group within an organization plays a role so they have a identity. Their are nine ways they practice giving organizations identities, but one that stood out in particular was "providing a specific vocabulary of motives". Coming into an organization you want everybody to have the same motives, so if your a car sales man, you would want to be very social, caring to what the customer wants and friendly. Everybody on that cars salesman team will know also that they each have a role on how to act and also meet a certain quota of how many cars to sell.

Challenging in an organization: power and control

As we talk about power and control, I think about taking over the whole world. I look at power as having too much control, then there’s less satisfaction. Today’s recession nobody can complain because they never know when they will be getting their next page check. In the book it says people’s decisions about where to live, when to have children, and how to spend their leisure time is increase based on career related concerns (chapter 6 pg 184). I feel their nothing wrong with putting your family in consideration. I can’t go buy a million dollar house I know im only going to have my job for six months. Life decisions should be revolved around family first.

Surveillance

In chapter 6 they talk about surveillance, which is the constant supervision. I don’t like how Foucault’s speaks about disclosure and uses the word prisoners. I feel regardless of how you over step the boundaries you should never have to be called a prisoners. In today’s society, are basic surveillance in an organization is cameras or security guards. In the retail shop are surveillance is never seen, they are guards who look like normal people. At my job during the after school program, we would be the only type surveillance, it goes more off of what did he or she say.

Practical View

Have you ever thought about how those billion dollar corporations are ran and how they keep the organization running so smoothly. Here's maybe one concept, in our book it talks about practical view, this is what it says, mangers desires for practical advice and specific communication strategies for enhanced competitiveness and increased employee satisfacation. Most ceo create a enviorment for their employees to be heavenly involved in the company. The organization technology Savoy and also gives them more leverage. In my company we constantly have meetings so we are constanly trying to enhance our ability to grow as a small business. ( Chapter 5)

Organization Culture

The word symbolic goes back to when this earth was first creating, as we look around at our earth, everything is symbolic. Our book reference organizational culture saying that it stands for the actions, ways of thinking, practices, stories, and artifacts that characterize a particular organization. For the most part everything we do represents who we are and what we stand for. Culture plays significant roles, for example in India the women are fully covered except for their face. Over in India that means their off limits and there are limitations to who they talk to and how far intimacy can go. Over here in the United States our women are free to wear what they want, that states high volumes of independence. The longer we continue to stud culture the better we will understand each other. ( Chapter 5, pg 127)

peter senges's learning organization

Peter Senge, a theorist of learning organization has succeeded at bringing systems thinking to those who actually manage corporations. When a system of a corporation has lack of knowledge, they then have a disability which prolongs them from excelling. There are five features that the learning organization exhibit, one that stood out in particular is personal mastery. Stating that all members share a personal commitment to learning and self reflection. My dad owns a real estate company and when he sits down with his team he wants everybody to be committed and open minded to learn new theories. Senge then says that there is a major shift of mind, which seems like that part, would be the self motivating side of it. Chapter 4

Goals

Chapter 4 refines how the systematic operations can make and brake a organization. I beleive goals are very important and play a big role in the perspectives of organization. Michael Keeley says that he distinguishes between the goals of individual , which are personal and highly variable , and the goals individuals have for their organization, which are more likely to be shared. Everybody seeks out different goals, but the company and the individual should share very similar ones, if not they should be in the same direction. The most important thing within the company's that the communication is open, because what one might think is good , the other may think the total opposite. Goals are essential , but yet can still cause conflict if not desired .

Maslow's Hierarchy of needs

The human resources approach was very interesting, especially on how informal communication is important and that human decision making is emotional as well as rational. The goal within an organization is to encourage employee participation and dialogue. Maslow poses a question, “what kinds of management and what kinds of reward or pay will help human nature to grow healthily into its fuller and fullest stature”? If all the conditions are meeting I guess the nature of business would run smoothly. Every condition would need to be meet of Maslow, physiological, safety, love and self esteem. If management is meeting each individual needs, then the prosperity of the company will go well. I remember growing up and listing to adults needs in the workplace, I figured if they would have been meeting the organization would have had a happy place. Maslow theory leaves open space for employees to push themselves to the fullest to make sure all their needs are meet.

Three early perspectives on Organization and communication

The early perspectives on organization and communication are defined as classical management, human relations and human resources. These three theories have not been written with a communication focus, although do play a role in communication. So I came across the foundational work in human relations and how it led to three different lines of research that merit our consideration (chapter 3, page 75). The first was how the effects of leadership style on worker productivity, second were identifying the limitations of decisions making in an organization and finally the focus between senior mangers and organizational environment (pg 76). Within an organization these points are very important, it keeps the communication open between employs and subordinates. The second I came across the leadership style, I already know that this pertain to me. So in the chapter their relating poor performance to poor management, we wonder where the downfall of job productivity went. Our economy team that we have for the United States is a clear example of reflection, our taxes were being raised, and people were being laid off left and right. Now that is our new president job to recognize those flaws and that’s what a leader does. The economy team reflects the president, so the job productivity was satisfied. I feel the position I hold and the people that work under me represent me. As a leader I lead by example because I know what needs to get done and how it needs to get done. Also people job productivity relates to the type of leader you are, I am a people orientated person, so I can relate very well.

Intor/work history

Hey everybody, I'm currently a senior, so excited. This is my first time taking a online class and it has been very difficult for me. This whole blogging thing has driven me crazy, but I'm getting the hang of it. So i have not had that many jobs, neither have they been that exciting. Growing up my parents said as long as your in school, you don't have to work. I took that saying and ran with it until i moved out my parents house. Luckily when i did start working, i had good work ethic. I look at working as a way to provide for all my needs and wants. I didn't start off with one job, i had two. I worked for a security company that was full time and a after school program that was part time. I felt i had some years to make up since Ive never officially had to pay taxes, my time was past due. I ended up quieting my security job and working for the after school program full time. I love my job for the after school program, my job is exciting and new everyday. So this is a little about myself, i hope to get to talk to everybody sometime in class, good luck everybody.
